
Pickled red onions
Pickled red onions are a wonderful addition to many dishes. They offer a perfect balance of sweetness and acidity and add a beautiful pop of color to any dish. Here is a simple and quick recipe to make these delicious onions at home.
Our tip: If your eyes always burn when you cut onions, it's because of the juice that comes out of the damaged cells. To avoid this or at least to limit it, you should use a sharp knife. Ingredients:
- 6 large red onions
- 300ml water
- 300ml white vinegar (60ml vinegar essence + 240ml water)
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1 tbsp salt
- Optional: 1 tbsp chili flakes, pepper or mustard seeds
Directions:
Peel the red onions and cut them into thin rings or half-moons using the Damascus steel utility knife. Put the cut rings directly into your large preserving jar. It is best to use a large, sealable jar or other heat-resistant container for this recipe. Feel free to pull the rings apart a little. If you want to add more spices, you can add them to the jar over the onions.

Now continue with the vinegar mixture. Boil the water briefly in a pot. If you're in a hurry, you can boil the water in the kettle. As soon as it stops bubbling, you can stir in the vinegar, salt and sugar. Stir the mixture until everything has dissolved. As soon as it has cooled down a little, you can pour the mixture over the onions. Make sure that the onions are completely covered.
Let the onions cool at room temperature. Then close the jar and put it in the fridge. The pickled onions are ready to use after about 30 minutes, but develop a more intense flavor if left overnight. They will keep in the fridge for up to two weeks. The pickled red onions are a great addition to salads, Sandwiches, tacos, burgers or as a side dish to grilled meat and fish.
